Even though Summer will soon be upon us, there will be many opportunities for education and networking in the weeks and months to come. There are two events in June and the upcoming Student Informatics Conference to be held at SUNY Downstate on September 23, 2011.

There is still time to submit nominations for the Board and Committees, so let me thank you in advance for volunteering to keep our Chapter alive and active.

NYS Chapter Board Nominations Now Open

Nominations are now open for the four elected positions for the Board of Directors for the HIMSS New York State Chapter:
  • President elect
  • Treasurer
  • Co-secretaries (2)
To nominate yourself or another member, e-mail the nominee's name, e-mail, name of desired position, and a brief bio-sketch by June 10, 2011 to Dr. Ken Ong at keo9016@nyp.org.

Voting will be open from June 14th through June 28th. Voting instructions and the website address (URL) will be e-mailed under separate cover. The new one-year term for both elected and appointed Board of Directors will begin July 1, 2011.

Healthcare Information Technology Certificate Program Job Fair

We would like to invite you to discuss careers in Health Information Technology with recent graduates of the Columbia and Cornell HIT Certificate Programs. You will have up to three hours to speak with students about potential careers in your organization. You are welcome to send us job descriptions along with information about your organization so that we may best prepare students.

About the Certificate Program: The HIT Certificate Program is a six-month course that provides students with the knowledge and skills required to use electronic health records (EHRs). The course is distinguished by:
  • Curriculum development in collaboration with individuals from industry, government, and academia
  • A focus on the key skills required in the HIT workforce
  • A practical, hands-on approach combined with core informatics concepts
  • Team-based learning methodology to provide a higher level of understanding through peer discussion,assessment, and problem solving
Students complete all of the core topics, additional topics as appropriate to their background, and specialize in a workforce training role as described below.

Core topics:
  1. EHR and related systems
  2. Business operations and project management
  3. Health Care Information Services
  4. Supporting health care decisions
  5. Health data exchange and security
Additional topics:
  1. The US health care system
  2. Computer Science Concepts for health IT
  1. Workforce Training Roles: (as defined by the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT)
  2. Health Information Management and Exchange Specialist
  3. Health Information Privacy and Security Specialist
  4. Programmer and Software Engineer
Course method/structure:
  • Team-based learning (TBL) –TBL activities allow students to both hone their collaborative skills and integrate knowledge at a higher level than traditional teaching
  • Individual learning– Certificate students read or listen to online materials to allow asynchronous individual learning; this is followed by online self-assessment tests before doing TBL assignments
  • Capstone project – A group project is presented as a simulated implementation of an EHR to a small practice and provides experience in completing tasks and creating documents typically found in the HIT industry
  • Role-based training – Additional lectures and assignments focus on training for the ONC-defined roles
About the students (total number: 77):

Degrees: All students have BA/BS. 45 have graduate degrees (33 MA/MS/MBA/MPH, 7 MD, 2 PhD, 3 JD)

Experience: On average, students have 17 years of work experience, including 7 years of management experience.

Background: Most have professional experience in either a clinical or technical field:
  • 50% Clinical (medicine, pharmacy, occupational/physical therapy, dentistry, nursing)
  • 48% Public health
  • 34% Medical research
  • 23% Pharmaceutical companies
  • 34% Mathematics/Computer science
  • 38% Biology
EHR experience:
  • 60% have experience with EHRs
  • Students with EHR experience have an average of 4 years of experience.
